Your evocative essence is ready to set a seductive fire for hours. Then why wait, Let’s make your most-liked perfume of all time!

Last weekend, while searching for a memorable, priceless gift for my mother, I came across the shelves layered with out-class, sleek-designed bottles of perfumes. Zapped on I decided to take one, but sniffing on a few, shattered my mind as few had elements that were not my mother’s choice, and some were way too expensive, while some were too witchy for my mom!

At the same moment, a thought landed in my mind, “Why not make something myself that my mother will surely love”.

I started scrolling Google, as I was super-excited to make something delightful for my lovely Mom. I rushed to grab the things because I learned there is no science to make perfumes, just your nose and love for fragrances is enough. Yep!!!

After that first venture, I make some of my favorites as well. Oh, by the way, my mother simply loved my idea and was so overwhelmed by the fragrance I designed for her!

In this blog, I created a layout of all the steps you must go through to craft your signature scent. Let’s read down!

First Step: Land on Your Favorite Notes

Pick the elements you feel are attractive and must be in your perfume. Remember, not to stick to a few families, choose citrusy, fruity, or anything light for your top note, something hearty, floral, fruity, or herbal that works for your middle notes, and base notes with strong, woody tones.

You’ll be searching for elements so that your essential oil contains everything you want to shape your perfume

Rule of Percentage % in Fragrance Oil

Making a perfume needs specific ratios of every element, you’ll be adding 20% fragrance oil to the perfume. This could be 15% or less depending on the type of perfume you are making, like Eau de perfume, perfume de toilette, perfume oils, extrait de perfume, or colognes!

Every millimeter contains 20 drops of essential oil. If you making 5 mL perfume it means you’ll be adding 100 drops of essential oil. Recording your recipe is a must so that if you recreate your fragrance you have everything in your booklet.

Let me break the Top, Heart, and Base notes percentages, so don’t have to worry about anything:

  • Top Note with 25% of 100 drops means in 5 mL, you will count on 25 drops.
  • The middle note sum of 40% will be like 40 Drops out of 100 Drops, as calculated above.
  • Base Note will have 35 drops as 35% of 5 mL.

For instance, if you are preparing 30 mL you will be:

20 Drops into 30 mL= 600 Drops

You’ll count on 25% of the top note with 150 drops, 40% of the heart note with 240 drops, and 210 drops from the base note constituting 35% of the fragrance oil.

The perfume industry is secretive with lots of hidden gems and mysteries, but slowly you’ll be igniting the love of fragrance and empowering yourself with creativity!

Preparing Accords: Mixing & Matching Fragrance Oil with Alcohol

To create tempting fragrances you will have to be careful with the alcoholic ratio otherwise it’s a waste of time and the ingredients you bought.

Remember perfume you are making is the story of your life that should be as enthusiastic as you are!

Want strength and sillage in your scent, go for lower concentrations of alcohol this is the concentration that makes perfume enduring. If you are going on higher concentrations of alcohol you’ll get lasting projections but unfortunately, it won’t have lasting impressions.

  • Eau de Toilette (EDT) is a perfume with 80-85% of alcohol, while fragrance oil it has is 5–15%
  • Eau de Parfum (EDP) has 60–70% alcohol with fragrance Oil of 15–20%.
  • Parfum (Extrait de Parfum) has an alcohol percentage of 10–20% with fragrance Oil of 20–30%.
  • Eau de Cologne (EDC) has the lowest fragrance oil concentration i-e 2-5% with alcohol 85–90%

Theory of Whisking & constituting

Oh Great! We have moved to the final process now…Fold your sleeves, arrange your workspace with bottles of fragrance oil, and alcohol, gleaming designed bottles with lids, piece of cloth for cleaning.

  • Take the base note, add the middle, and then the top note in the same order.
